Demonstration - Simple Acorn

PLEASE READ INSTRUCTIONS THROUGH AT LEAST ONCE BEFORE BEGINNING

Colors:  Raw Sienna, Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber, Paynes Gray, Cobalt Blue, and Sap Green.

Brush:  3/8" Synthetic Slanted Flat or Angular

Technique:  Wet on Dry.

Paper:  Strathmore 300 Series (Student Grade) Cold Press

With this demonstration, I worked a little dryer with my paint consistencies.  Using pans rather than tube pigments, I sprayed the pigments I planned to use and worked straight from the pan.  The consistency was creamy.

1 Begin with line drawing and applying Raw Sienna leaving a white unpainted area for sunlight.

2 After Raw Sienna was dry, I placed Burnt Sienna to right side (shaded side) and a streak towards the left of the white unpainted area.  Very gently I used the corner of the brush to blend.

3 Once dry, I repeated with Raw Sienna to darken the tone.

4 Using the very tip of the brush, I dapped on marks in the cap with Raw Sienna.

5 Again using tip of brush, I merged a few of the dabs initially applied.

6 Before adding the darker pigment, once previous step was dry, I took my clean damp brush and pulled some of the pigment from the paint spots over into the white area.  Allowed to dry and added little dabs of Burnt Umber between the Burnt Sienna dab marks.

7 Again waiting till previous step was dry, I used the very corner tip of my angular brush and painted in a fine lost and found line of Burnt Umber around the part of the cap.  At this point I added a piece of the stem at top.

8 This shows where a bit more Burnt Umber was used to darken the stem area only at one side (right side).

9 This shows where I added some Burnt Umber to the far right of the acorn for added depth; taking care not to disturb the pigment layers below.

10 Making sure cap is completely dry from previous step(s), I added a pale wash of Sap Green, making sure I left a white unpainted area to depict sunlight.  Also used a clean damp brush to pull some of the pigment from the stem over towards the left.

9 Analyzing depth and tones, I added a little more definition around the cap and within with a touch of Paynes Gray.  It is up to the individual how much of the cap they wish to emphasize.  I could have left the top left alone without adding a deeper tone but chose to do so.

10 Once all was dry, I added the shadow with Cobalt Blue.  Once shadow was dry, I used a clean damp brush and softened the outer edge of the shadow just a little in a few places.
